Climate Adaptation in the Nile Basin: EIU Launches Flagship Research Fund

13 September 2026 · 6 min read · by Mr. Daniel Tesfaye

The Faculty of Agriculture & Environmental Studies has opened its flagship research fund — Climate Adaptation in the Nile Basin — with seed grants for six projects ranging from drought-index insurance to community flood early-warning systems. The fund prioritises co-authored research pairing EIU postgraduate students with regional partner institutions.

Awardees will publish through the EIU Research Portal under open licences, and datasets will be archived in the university's digital repository. The fund also finances a yearly public lecture and a policy brief series for regional ministries.

"Adaptation research fails when it stays in journals," says fund lead Dr. Kalkidan Tesfaye. "We are funding science that a district officer can act on."
